This is short passage of writing which is written for suspense. You could put it into a book with other suspense pieces of writing.
Downstairs
What was that? Or more likely who was that?
As Scotty dodged a creaky floorboard on the stairs, the darkness
suddenly seemed to engulf him. Everything was black!
“Who’s there?” he stuttered in a frightened tone of voice. He was only
going to fill up his water-bottle before he had heard the stairs creak.
Bravely, he tiptoed forward through the pitch-black hallway downstairs. Without
warning, the lights flickered back on one by one and shadows loomed around
Scotty. Was it a coincidence that there was a power cut and the cat had stood
on the stairs or was someone there?
It was hard to tell. Scotty knew he could be running into danger, but
he also knew that it was his house and he wouldn’t allow strangers inside,
especially those who haven’t asked to come in. By then, he had made his mind up
that he would find out who was in the house. BANG!
